ZOMBIES: Author Bowie Ibarra gets weird in the old west

by Bowie Ibarra

ZombieBloodFights.com had a chance to visit with noted zombie horror and action/adventure writer Bowie V. Ibarra to talk about zombies, weird westerns, and his upcoming book, 'The Cruel Fate of Dr. Brewster McGill'.

ZombieBloodFights.com - Hey, Bowie.  It's great to have you on the blog today.

Bowie V. Ibarra - Thanks.  It's good to be here.

ZBF.com - I have to ask you this question first:  Does it actually make sense to have you interviewed on your own blog?

BVI - That's your first question?  I thought this was supposed to be a puff piece.

ZBF.com - Should we come back to it?

BVI - *shrugs* Yeah.

ZBF.com - Some people have suggested that this is how you write dialogue in your books.  Are you schizophrenic?

BVI - Wow.  No comment.  Who told you that?

ZBF.com - *shrugs*

BVI - No, goddammit.  Why don't we start with some stock dialogue?  You know, favorite color:  Maroon.  Favorite food:  Enchiladas.

ZBF.com - Okay.  That's enough ripping off dialogue from 'The Life Aquatic'.  What made you venture into writing a western, let alone a weird western?

BVI - Several reasons, really.  As a fan of the Jonah Hex comic, (Not the movie, mind you, that was a disaster with so much potential.  I enjoyed it, but I was very, very drunk when I watched it at a midnight screening.)  But as a fan of the Jonah Hex comic from back in the day and into the two reboots, I've always had a special spot for westerns.  Adding that 'weird' element was just a natural.

But the real idea came from a brainstorming session with writer and editor, Travis Adkins.  We were getting ideas for a collaboration (that I sincerely hope is still on the table, because the idea was tremendously great), and one of the ideas that didn't get picked up because of the direction we wanted to go still resonated with me.  I put the idea aside, but quickly found the spark for writing it as a short story.  And that's how we got 'The Cruel Fate of Dr. Brewster McGill'.

ZBF.com - So what's the story about?

BVI - The main theme that underlies the entire story is the power of greed and how dangerous it can become.  The story is about a British snake oil salesman named Dr. Brewster McGill and his trusty friend who come across a competitor that demonstrates an effective snake oil that not only cures-all, but can raise the dead.  Both salesmen are shady, but things escalate for the worst when McGill wants to have the source of the snake oil's power, an ancient Aztec relic, for himself.  As usual, the story rises to a tremendous finish.

ZBF.com - Where can people get a copy of the novella?

BVI - Its available at Amazon.com in paperback and kindle HERE.  $2.99 and $5.99.

ZBF.com - Those are great prices.  Why so affordable?

BVI - From the beginning, I've never wanted my books to be out of anyone's price range.  I'm perfectly fine with making minimal profit to pass savings on to my readers.  My books do me no good sitting on a cyber shelf at a high price.

ZBF.com - Thanks, Bowie.  So, before we go, back to my first question:  Does it actually make sense to have you interviewed on your own blog?

BVI - It makes absolute sense.  Remember the free promotional resources mentioned above?  Whether I was with a publisher or not, a majority of the promotion of any written work needs to be done by the author by any means necessary.  So I gotta do what I gotta do.

I'm like a promotional insurgent, attacking this new literary market from many different and unorthodox angles.

ZOMBIES: Season 3 Finale 'Wild Speculation' for 'Welcome to the Tombs - Walking Dead

by Bowie Ibarra

JACKIE DRUGA, Permuted Press author of FLU

Oh! Oh! This is the week where my wild speculation is spot on! Simply by viewing the two sneak peek trailers, this is my ‘Wow she nailed it’ predication for the season finale.

Milton discovers Andrea has been taken hostage by the Gov. As he tries to free and help Andrea, Gov comes in. After nailing Milton with that mighty punch, which by the way IMO wasn’t enough to take out bad ass Merle. Gove says to Andrea, “I’ll set you free, but you have to come with us. You have to be the one to get Michonne for me,” he tells her and a few other dubious lies. She says no and he laughs, we see him close the door. He rallies his forces. Tyrese stays behind with Sasha. Tyrese finds out via Milton, what the Gov has done to Andrea and turns the tides inside.

Meanwhile back at the prison, Rick and the crew have packed up, heeding Merle’s deathbed advice of Michonne to warn them. He sends Carol, Beth, Baby Judith (No she isn’t going to die) Carl and Hershel away and to be hidden. Gang Woodbury arrive to ambush the prison. Booby traps are set for them. Remember Michonne said, “We don’t have to win we just have to make it hard for them to get us.”

Daryl has found transport and heads back to the prison. He arrives as Rick, Micky, Maggie and Glenn are watching from a distance the Gov and his people fall.

The four of them, in turn head to Woodbury.

In short, they make their away in. The Gov, pissed off about the unsuccessful ambush, realizes that Team Prison is at his home front and goes there. This is where the battle takes place. This is where Maggie or Glen will die. They have been playing on them being happy and married so that is foreshadowing they won’t be. Michonne finds Milton who tells her Andrea is in the torture chamber. She goes there, Andrea’s head is down, when she lifts it, she’s a walker, Michonne takes her out. Rick fails in killing the Gov and he gets away. Team prison moves into Woodbury. The clean up begins.

GARETH WOOD, Permuted Press author of RISE

I predict for the season finale, either Milton or Andrea kills the Governor. Hershel will be killed in the showdown. Carol and the baby will be killed. The Governor kills Rick and adopts Carl to raise as his own. Andrea and the Governor elope.

ARMY ED, Special Weapons and Tactics Advisor to ZombieBloodFights.com

The people in the prison need to take off.  Let the Governor take the prison, cut their losses, and run.  There's no sense defending the place.  They can find another place to defend.  Let the Governor expend resources in this futile move for revenge.

There's just too much at stake for the prison to fight this maniac.

MICHAEL S. GARDNER, author of the short story collection, Death in the Times of Madness, and the zombie novella (that’s only a buck), Betrayal. He also blogs at: www.atasteofterror.blogspot.com. Look for his new zombie novel, Downfall, which is coming soon.

Well, last week was a tear-jerker. I truly was saddened with the loss of Merle. He, in my opinion, had a lot left to offer the show. But that’s what happens when you’re thrust into a world filled with walkers and one-eyed gov’nas, I suppose.
For the big season finale, I’m thinking that we’ll see Andrea get rescued (unfortunately) by either Michonne or Rick. I’m really betting on the former, however, as I imagine the gov’na or Tyreese will put one in the back of her head. Andrea won’t die, I’m thinking; we need a kickass female lead, and it’s apparent that Michonne isn’t what the director and writers are looking for.
Speaking of females, my girl, Maggie, will bite the big one. Her ghost came and told me this last night. Or maybe that was a dream. Glenn too. They’re both goners. Herschel will do his best to save them. However, a flight of stairs – his arch nemesis – will prevent him from doing so. The old man, this time, will run out of shotgun ammunition, as well as balance, and be consumed by a mob of hungering walkers.
Rick, well, he’ll be doing stuff and things; that much is obvious. My money is on Daryl fucking up the gov’na and his cronies. I imagine it happening like this: Daryl on top, choking the dirty politician and holding his head down so the walkers can peel slabs of flesh from the buffet of his face and lap up the blood like parched, feral canines.
Lori will make an appearance, but who cares? Even if it is significant.
We’ve been warned this season’s ending would leave us speechless, so all bets are off. I would prefer that we lose at least half of the cast. Nothing personal; it’s just time for a big change.
Oh, and if Daryl dies, we riot.

THOMAS, VW Tech Guy

Rick and the folks in the prison have booby-trapped the prison, ready to let The Governor and his Death Squad infiltrate the labyrinthine facility.  This will allow the Walking Dead folks to attack the Governor from all angles.

I also predict the Governor will get his other eye poked out and fall victim to a zombie.

ZOMBIEBLOODFIGHTS.COM

If I don't see Zombie Lori in this episode, I'll be upset.

BLOOD: SATX Horror Aficionado Reviews 'Evil Dead' Rebirth

KELLY WARREN HAMMOND FACEBOOKS HIS REVIEW

By Bowie Ibarra

Well, I didn't write this review.  I admit it.

I pretty much ripped it off from SATX Bloodthirsty Thursday Mastermind Kelly Warren Hammond's Facebook page.  Hey, I did reach out and ask his permission (I hadn't heard back from him.  Doh!).

Do me a favor.  Click on that Bloodthirsty Thursday live link in the previous paragraph and 'like' it on
Facebook.  C'mon, you're liking kittens, snarky memes, and John Denver's tribute page, you can like this page.  Take the four-seven seconds it takes to do that and come back here.

You might remember the SATX Bloodthirsty Thursday events previously mentioned in the ZBF.com blog, including interviews with people leaving the 'Return of the Living Dead' screening, and a review of a screening of the underrated 80s classic, "My Bloody Valentine'.

I'm reposting the Facebook review here because it is a great review from a noted horror hound that I think needs to be read by others looking forward to the movie, like myself.

So, here it is.  There is a bit of a spoiler at the end about a cameo, so consider that before reading.

Again, my apologies to Kelly.  The review was just too awesome to keep under wraps.

I owe you a beer, Kelly.

Check it out and get ready for April 5th!

"The GOOD, The BAD and "I'm the Guy with the Gun" Review:

THE GOOD:
1. THIS_IS_NOT_A_REMAKE!!! rather, as the ED2013 official web site says, "It's a Rebirth" so, with that said you can take the movi...e one of two ways. simply, it's a "rebirth" or re-imagining of the original concept OR it's a semi-sequel. you watch it. you decide.

2. there was more blood, gore (and profanity?!!) than had seen in an R rated horror flick since....well, possibly DEAD ALIVE. so no fear blood, guts and gore lovers there is plenty and i do mean PLENTY of it to go around. :)

3. as some "critics" would had seen ED2013 just a couple of weeks ago pointed out that the "character development" slowed down the pace of the movie. i can NOT disagree more! the movie starts off with a *punch* in the face/gut, then moves into character development (and with only a handful of characters, and 2 of them are main characters who cares), then sets you up for what is about to happen and then....here it comes, BOOM!!! non-stop AWESOMENESS there after.

4. unlike EDII and the "third installment" AOD, this 2013 version actually feels like you are watching an "Evil Dead" movie but with out the campyness.

THE BAD
1. to many "cut to black screen" at the end of scenes. one or two, OK i'm fine with that, but 4 or 5 of them? made if feel like the director and editor couldn't really decide on how they wanted certain scenes to end and/or flow into each other. oh well....

2. if you've watch either the Green Band Trailer or the Red Band Trailer there's a very popular piece of footage that is shown in both, but not in the actual movie. *shugs* dunno why, maybe it seemed like over kill (no pun intended) but it's just not there.

3. Mia has 2 corny lines towards the end of the movie. had they cut it down to just one, i would have been happy with that. BUT... at least they weren't as bad as the lines (and the line delivery) like in the recent TCM3D movie: "Welcome to Texas, asshole...!" and "Do your thing, cousin!"

"I'm the Guy with the Gun"
1. yes, Yes, YES Bruce Campbell has a cameo. you'll need to stay to the very tail end of the credits because it's quick and cool. :)"
Thanks, Kelly.  I hope you don't mind me sharing it.  It was a great review.  I'll buy you a beer at the screening on April 5th.

And expect a ZombieBloodFights.com review on the weekend of April 5th, the official release date of 'The Cruel Fate of Dr. Brewster McGill', incidentally, in paperback and Kindle.

ZOMBIES: Merle's Dirge, or The Zpoc's playlist

MUSIC TO SMASH THE LIVING DEAD TO

by Bowie Ibarra

Merle Dixon, one of the most despicable, yet interesting, characters on 'The Walking Dead', met his fate making a final futile push against the leader of Woodbury, Philip the Governor.  One of the most fascinating choices he made as he girded his loins to go on his veritable suicide mission was to look for drugs and ask for liquor at the prison.  As he moved closer to his destiny, he apparently found a bottle of whiskey and jammed out to Motorhead's 'Fast and Loose' in a car as he got shitfaced and lined up zeds for his suicide attack on the governor at the rendezvous point.

Or maybe they were just Motorhead fans?

At any rate, as much as the song was a theatrical convention that was relevant to describing the character, it was also a great choice to go on an all-out assault of the enemy during the zombie apocalypse.

With that said, let's take a look at some musical pieces The Walking Dead has used, and music outside of the movie themes that have laced the background of many of our favorite zpoc movies and books.

Well, books from ZombieBloodFights.com, that is.

'THE WALKING DEAD - I Ain't a Judas'

The Governor apparently had a thing for the music of Frederick Chopin, because his music was played several times this season.  When Andrea returned to the Governor in this episode, the Governor was listening to Chopin's Raindrop Prelude.

In this same episode, Tom Wait's Hold On was also featured as well.

'THE WALKING DEAD' - Say the Word

Chopin made his music felt in this episode, where he used Chopin's 'Etude No. 3 in E', known popularly as 'Tristesse' to soothe his daughter as well as the guy that gave up his body to science to see if they could be saved.

DAWN OF THE DEAD '04 - When the Man Comes Around

Johnny Cash was a little played out after his death, but his song 'When the Man Comes Around' and the imagery behind it really set the tone for this re-envisioning of the classic Romero hit.  And who can forget the silly 'Down with the Sickness' interpretation by Richard Cheese?  Of course, the movie finished with the hard version by Disturbed.

28 DAYS LATER - Bach's 'Ave Maria'

One of the many haunting moments of the movie '28 Day Later' was when the survivors were traveling on the major highway out of London in a Taxi, this song played in the background.  We were greeted with images of a smoldering London and an even bleaker future for the survivors.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD - Party Time

When the dead rose from the dead to attack the living, the skeletal face that opened its eyes and smiled started this song off, and you knew things were about to get real.  From this point on, it was running zombies (before running zombies were cool) and zeds talking on CBs asking for 'more paramedics'.  Brains, baby.  Brains.

DOWN THE ROAD by Bowie Ibarra - Albinoni's Adagio

George Zaragoza pulls out of his apartment complex off of IH-35 near William Cannon in Austin, Texas, and plays Albinoni's Adagio for Strings on his Chevy Cavalier tape player.  The song is used to accentuate the turmoil he sees in the traffic headed out of Austin.

DOWN THE ROAD:  ON THE LAST DAY by Bowie Ibarra - Bread of Life

The title of the story and elements within it were completely inspired by a traditional church song I grew up with called 'Bread of Life'.  The theme of the dead rising from the dead on the last day was the complete theme of the zombie apocalypse in Beeville, Texas, and its fight with the United Nations infiltration of Texas.

Incidentally, the story shares a similar theme as Woodbury in 'The Walking Dead', with the mayor securing the city with the citizenry.  The mayor, however, is not half as sinister as The Governor, but ten times more lascivious.

DOWN THE ROAD:  THE FALL OF AUSTIN

A car chase during the zombie apocalypse?  You betcha.

Two rivals chase each other up IH-35 into downtown Austin in a wild car chase that has shades of 'The Road Warrior' in it.  One of the rivals jumps into a vehicle to find Technotronic's 'Pump up the Jam' in the CD player, and the song plays as the deadly car chase ensues.

This is certainly not a definitive list of zombie movie music outside of the movie's main theme, or music from books.  But its a start.

Let me know a song that has played in the background of a zombie movie, book, or TV show that has added to the ambiance in the comments section below and I'll add it to the blog.

This offer is good FOREVER, so let me know.

And with that, RIP Merle.  You were a sonovabitch, but damn I'd have you on my Zpoc team if you didn't mind hanging out with my Mexican ass.

ZOMBIES: Recap 'This Sorrowful Life', The Walking Dead

by Bowie Ibarra

'This Sorrowful Life' wasn't as explosive as anticipated.  But it did provide yet another sad turn of events for one of the TV show's most interesting characters.  Here's how things went down.

==  Rick is getting his inner circle (Herschel, Glenn, and Daryl) up to date on the move to sell out Michonne to the Governor.  Rick then approaches Merle, who says Rick doesn't have the guts to do it.

==  Sure enough, Rick second-guesses himself and calls the move off.  But Merle has taken matters into his own hands and made the move himself.  When the group finds out, Daryl goes out to find him on his own.

==  After finding a car to make the trip faster, Michone talks sense to Merle and changes his point of view.  He lets her go.

==  With nowhere to go anymore, he plays the only move he has left.  He gets shitfaced drunk listening to Motorhead's 'Fast and Loose', and sets up a one-man ambush of the Governor and his death squad at the rendezvous point.  He finds a position to start picking off the death squad as they get tied up with zombies that Merle let loose into the area.  He's only moments away from picking off the Governor when his position is discovered and he is brutally beaten before the Governor shoots him.

==  Daryl finds Michone, and though he thinks she killed Merle at first, she tells him what he did.  Daryl finds the rendezvous point and the victims of the ambush.  One of them happens to feasting on Ben, who was shot in the massacre.  Daryl discovers its his brother and puts him down by stabbing him in the head multiple times.  We then have to watch our hero deal with this tragic loss.

Next week, 'Welcome to the Tombs' debuts, the finale of Season 3.  I can already imagine what that episode is implying.

Thanks for reading.

ZOMBIES: Wild Speculation 'This Sorrowful Life', Walking Dead

by Bowie Ibarra

Things are coming to a head between Woodbury and the prison.  ZombieBloodFights.com brings some wild speculation on the upcoming last two episodes of the season.  Check it.

JACKIE DRUGA, author of Flu from Permuted Press

Holy Cow was last week the best episode? I just loved it. Filled with suspense, action, and lots of moments that I have missed in Walking Dead … making me scream!

We pull into the final weeks and here is my speculation. Like most of you I have watched the clips, sneak peaks and such. By what I seen and what I feel, this is the big week! The producers told us that two major deaths will occur this half of the season, so I am going to say one of them is this week. This is the week that starts it all.

Rick makes the decision to give Michonne to the Gov, but it is a set up. They have no plans on really handing her over. This is Merle’s week to shine, as he is the one that goes after the Gov, behind Rick’s back, and tries to kill him.

Things will erupt at the meeting hence starting the war. But not without a casualty. I think Merle to Herschel will die at the meeting causing the shot that started it all. I also predict that Milton will turn on Woodbury this week and join the prison. Oh, yeah, Tyrese finds Andrea.

ARMY ED, Weapons and Tactical advisor to ZBF.com

The Governor got bit.

That's right.  The Governor got bit during the melee in the building in his vengeful pursuit of Andrea.  The way he was adjusting his jacket after the event seemed to hint at that.  He'll die, but take others with him before he goes.

Andrea is in some deep water, but Milton will be the one to save her.

As for the Prison vs. Woodbury matchup, its going to be a wholesale slaughter.  My picks on those that make it out alive will be Rick, Carl, Daryl, and Tyrese.  That's right.  The baby dies, too.

BOWIE IBARRA, ZombieBloodFights.com mastermind

I think we're finally going to get the Zombie Lori reveal in this episode.  It's going to play out exactly like Morgan shared with Rick.  Watch for it.

I also think Andrea is tortured to death by the Governor.  I don't see her making it out alive, but we'll see.

ZOMBIES: Recap 'Walking Dead - Prey'

by Bowie Ibarra

As you might expect, even in the zpoc, humans can't get along and present an united front against a common enemy.  Here's a recap from 'The Walking Dead' episode 'Prey'.

-- The show opens with Andrea has a secret meeting with Michonne in the woods.  But while that's going down, the Governor is constructing a custom torture chamber for Michonne and any and all of his foes.  He looks a liiiiiitle too turned on at the prospect.

--  Woodbury gears up for war.  It's all or nothing for the town, and Andrea realizes she's been duped again.  I don't know, maybe they should consider the benefits of the 'nothing' option.

--  Milton talks with the Governor about the offensive, but discovers the torture chamber.  Awkward.

--  Milton leaks info about the torture chamber to Andrea and then shows it to her.  Then the governor shows up to test audio recording equipment.  Kinky.
-- Milton and Andrea explore the assassination option.  Hey Andrea, too little too late.  You could have killed him after banging him out a few nights before.  Do you get it now?
--  Milton says killing the Governor would only put Martinez in charge.  Things would go from bad to worse in Woodbury with the death squad leader at the helm.  It's a 'Day of the Dead' situation.  You remember when Major Cooper died and Sgt. Rhodes took over the underground base?

--  Andrea tries to make a run to warn the prison, but gets disarmed by Martinez and propositioned by the Governor.  Best thing you could do, Andrea, is stick with the team for the attack and off the governor before the battle even begins.  You wanted to shoot him just moments before.  Keep your friends close, and enemies closer, you know?

--  Tyrese and Sascha are on the wall on the watch and let Andrea run for the prison.  They're not cold enough to shoot her.   They then have to answer to the Governor on why they let her go.  Governor figures out Milton leaked info to her.

--  Tyrese confronts his other two friends, who are firmly behind the Governor.

--  Governor tracks Andrea, and the hunt is on.  She runs into a building to escape the Governor.  After some cat-and-mouse and squashing a zeds face via some Greg Nicotero magic, Andrea makes a break for it and the Governor is confronted by zeds.

-- The pit that Woodbury gathered zombies for the ZombieBloodFights.com Games at the Woodbury Arena of Sport and other such experiments is set ablaze by a mysterious figure.

-- Andrea is yards away from the prison.  She's so close she can see Rick on the tower.  She can't cry out or the zeds would be on her, so she just waves.  But the Governor catches her and takes her back.  He tells the people at the gate he didn't find her.  He also discovers the sabotage and knows who did it.  Milton has a very bad poker face.

--  Show ends with Andrea strapped to the Governor's custom chair as the first contestant to initiate the Re-education Room.  You know, work out the kinks.  See what works and doesn't work.  You know, general torture to the death trial and error stuff.

Two more episodes, folks.  The two opposing factions throw down next week.  Get ready.

ZOMBIES: Wild Spec. for 'Prey', The Walking Dead

By Bowie Ibarra

This week, the always capable Jackie Druga takes the Wild Speculation helm.  Here are her thoughts:

JACKIE DRUGA, author of the Permuted Press title 'Flu'

My speculation for the first of the final three.

I’m gonna extend my speculation to episode 15 as well, because if I am wrong, I can change it next week.

Merle rocks. He does. The people in the prison need to listen to him.  He makes sense. Look for Merle to really shine, to get on our good side.

Michonne will find out via Herschel that she is the trade for peace and she’ll turn herself in. Not without a plan. Merle will go with her.

Remember the episode where Andrea rallied the town of Woodbury. Has anyone considered instead of the cliché good verses bad war, that Andrea is able to rally Woodbury and secretly turn the town against the Governor. I am going to make that speculation.

Look for the first of Andrea conversions to take place. She will rally the town, we as viewers won’t see it until the last episode. This episode will be about preparation. Watching Merle rise to the occasion, Tyrese turning to the prison, and Andrea doing an inside job. (Not a sexual reference). Again, watch for clues that she is going to have the town turn.

Did anyone else but me notice that Andrea didn’t know about Shane’s baby and to know that Rick’s weapons were combat ready takes an insider. Milton also gave the Governor a walkie talkie a few episodes back, that never was mentioned again. Insider at the prison … Maggie.

ZOMBIES: 'Arrow in the Doorpost' Walking Dead Notes

by Bowie Ibarra

Tensions were high in 'Arrow in the Doorpost'.  Here are some notes from ZombieBloodFights.com.

GOVERNOR AND RICK FACE-OFF

--  Rick, Daryl, and Herschel are part of a convoy to meet the Governor.

-- Great opening shot overhead of the silos where the Prison/Woodbury Peace Summit would take place.  Great shots throughout, creating great, bordering on arthouse-style pictures throughout.

--  Rick finds the shed where the Governor is waiting to broker a deal.  Rick puts his piece away, but the Governor has an ace in the hole taped to the side of the table.

--  Andrea shows up with Milton and Marquez.  She claims to have negotiated the peace talks.  She is quickly dismissed by the Governor, showing no respect to Andrea.

--  Rick suggests boundaries for co-existence, Governor doesn't want any of it.

--  Governor says he'll lay off if Rick sells out Michone.  He gives him two days to decide.

MARQUEZ AND DARYL, HERSCHEL AND MILTON

--  The muscle of both teams, Marquez and Daryl, flex their muscles putting down zeds.  Both know they're going to throw down eventually in spite of the diplomatic theatrics from their leaders.  But they respect their leaders enough to stay on their leashes.

--  Herschel and Milton have a moment together and bond over Herschel's cut off leg.

--  Herschel subtly reveals to Andrea the threat of rape the Governor posed to Maggie.  He also says she is still welcome with the prison crew.

PRISON GEARS UP

--  With all the weapons brought from Morgan and throughout their adventures, the team gears up.

--  Merle thinks they should jump the Governor at the meeting site, its the best opportunity to finish it.  Glenn shoots down the idea.

--  Merle takes the initiative and tries to gear up and make a run on the Governor, but Glenn stops him with physical force.

--  Merle tries to recruit Michone to go jump the Governor, but she turns him down, too.

RICK AND THE GOVERNOR'S RETURN

--  Rick weighs the options of selling out Michone by asking Herschel's thoughts.  Herschel says Michone has earned her place and is a big part of why their still alive and Glen and Maggie are safe.

-- The Governor says whether Rick brings in Michone or not, they're going on the offensive to crush the prison folks.

It's a great episode and lead up to next week.  We'll see how it plays out.  Join us later this week for the next 'Wild Speculation' as well.

FIGHTS: RCW SuperShow '13 teeters between fun and insanity

GENITAL MUTILATION, POORLY RUN CONCESSION STAND MAR WILD EVENT

by Bowie Ibarra

River City Wrestling has been a constant provider of pro-wrestling action for over ten years now.  As the Texas wrestling revival grows in strength, RCW has always been around, and is benefiting from the attention Texas wrestling is currently receiving.

On this night, it was the presence of TNA SuperStars at the event, joining with the already talented roster of the organization, that made the event wild and fun.  Here are some notes from another fun, yet out of control, event.

RETURN OF DINGO WALLABY

-- It was good to see Dingo Wallaby back from neck surgery.  We'll see soon if he chooses to compete again.  He did a good job announcing in spite of a poor sound system in the Aztec Soccer Arena.

LOW RIDER vs. STRAIGHT EDGE DUDE

--  Straight Edge Dude entered to a unique pick of a song:  Justin Beiber's 'Baby'.  Hmmmm....
--  Low Rider would power up in the ring by pantomiming taking a hit from a jay.  Now, wait a second.  This has become interesting, because 'straight edge' dudes are supposed to kick the asses of anyone doing drugs or drinking beer.
--  Straight Edge Dude wins, but then jumps the rail to get in the face of a fan.  It was a sign that things were going to get wild.

SIX MAN MATCH

--  A big six man match followed up the opening match, featuring the reunion of Dingo Wallaby with Honky Kong.

-- Ryan Oshun was a part of the team, too, and seemed to relish being with the good guys.

--  A third talent joined, too, who was said to be one of the students of the RCW school of wrestling.

-- The sleazy Joey Spector was a part of the heel faction, and man he looked like he put on some weight for the winter.  He was just as sleazy and gross as I remember him, and it was good to see him in action again.  He teamed with 'Twix' Rob Love and Jerimiah Jones.

ALISSA FLASH vs. KYRA MYA

--  Alissa Flash returned to RCW looking for answers as to why she was stripped of the RCW International Title.  Instead, she was greeted by the mammoth Kyra Mya and the Samoan Islander from Norman, Oklahoma, Michael Faith.  Its then that Sicodelico, Jr., joined Alissa at ringside.  The ringside partners were soon ejected, however, and things got out of hand.

--  Alissa took it to Kyra, who couldn't seem to get things going.  Alissa smashed Kyra with trash cans outside the ring, turning the match hardcore and taking out her aggression on being stripped of the International Title on the massive Mya.

-- Back in the ring, a masked 'large luchador' made it to the ring and trashed Alissa with a swirling slam, giving the win to Mya.  Thanks a lot, ref.

GRUDGE MATCH
'Ring King' Don Juan vs. Hernandez

--  Hernandez shows up jacked as usual in sweat pants and street shoes.  But he did paint his body blue with the superman logo emblazed across his chest.

-- Hernandez let a local fan dressed as Aquaman enter the fray and beat up on Juan.  Good old RCW-style fun.

--  After faking an injury, Don Juan jumped Hernandez and messed him up.  When he took the mike, he said how great he was.  That's when Rob Terry entered the ring to everyone's surprise and jacked up Don Juan with a power move.

Then Joey Ryan came in and joined in on the RCW wackiness.

That's when things got completely out of hand with the arrival of Aces and 8s.

Okay, three bad dudes on one bad guy.  People cheering.  TNAs in town.  I get it.  Get in some moves, lets have some fun.

Fans are overjoyed, now calling for the table.  Okay, well, still three bad guys.  Still just Don Juan, this is a little much, but okay.

Then the Aces and 8 hammer comes out, and now things are a little out of hand.  Are we really going to cheer for Aces and 8 to mutilate Don Juan's genitals with a hammer blow?  Is this Looney Tunes?  No, that's a real dude in there, and though this is still clearly theatre, the bloodlust that came over this crowd kind of chilled me.

Look, its one thing if a dude signs up for a hardcore match.  I get it.  Whatever happens to him he had coming.  You signed up to wrestle Masada, Onita, Cactus Jack, whatever.  You signed up for it, you deserve the brutality of whatever weapon gets used in there, and I'll watch it.

Don Juan might have deserved to get punked out by some of TNAs big stars, but he didn't sign up to have his eggs scrambled.

Time to go to the concession stand while these crazy bikers celebrate cracking a dudes nuts open in front of the now rabid RCW fans.

THE WAR OF ATTRITION AT THE CONCESSION STAND

This concession stand was the worst concession stand I have ever had a chance to wait in line for at an indy wrestling event.  Two people with their heads up their asses looking at the crowd like they never saw or expected this kind of crowd.  What is wrong with this place?  How do you not have people, at least four people, ready to go for the large crowd they had to have seen last month.

Then, one of the concession stand people bailed on the stand and left one poor high school sophomore with no gloves on to grab chips from the bag to put cold cheese on and put in a microwave(!!) because they were not ready with cheese in crock pot?

Boo this stand.  I'll just have a beer instead of a Frito-Pie.  20 minutes to get one beer.  Fix that, Aztec Soccer stadium.

RCW PHOENIX TITLE MATCH
"Most Interesting Wrestler in the World" Mitch Baxter vs. 'Centerfold' Matt Palmer

-- A great matchup.  It was cool to see Centerfold branch out in to other territories, and I think he did a great job against newbie Baxter.  The fans really liked him and I think were prompted by the section I was in.  Baxter takes the win with a cheating roll up.

--  I had fun telling Mitch Baxter's mom was a slut, because, well, she does bang out guys for money on film when she's not managing her son to wrestling victory.  Don't ask me how I know that, however.

RCW TITLE MATCH
'The Samoan Oklahoman' Michael Faith vs. Sicodelico, Jr.

--  Sicodelico, Jr., arrives at the ring in full Aztec Warrior themed regalia.

-- FAith arrived to the ring with Mya in tow for the match and put on mask to mock Sicodelico, who didn't take kindly to it.

--  The fight spills outside the ring and gets crazy!  Here are some snaps.

--- It was basically two on one in the match, and Sico lost to the Samoan Oklahoman.

All in all, I still had a good time.  RCW always delivers, and though I couldn't get behind the genital mutilation with the other fans, I still had fun.  That's why I pay my $10 to go to the shows.  RCW always delivers a good time.

FIGHTS: ATTN ROH: Make KotU vs. The Briscoes in SATX happen!

by Bowie Ibarra

Picture ripped off from a dude named Clint Hanson
As many pro-wrestling fans in south Texas know, Ring of Honor is making its way to San Antonio, Texas for a big show.  Its the first time Ring of Honor will be in the Alamo city, which is what makes the potential for great matchups unique.

If Ring of Honor is coming to the SATX, the city is the territory of one of the greatest tag teams to fight out of the Lone Star State:  The Kingz of the Underground.

ZombieBloodFights.com proposes that the best tag team in Texas take on the best tag team Ring of Honor has to offer:  The Briscoes.

This potential match has been brewing for a while.  Last year, 'Showtime' Scot Summers issued challenge after challenge to Jay Briscoe via his Twitter account,(@KOTUSCOT) in an effort to have a one on one match against him at Anarchy Championship Wrestling in Austin, Texas.  They were met with ridicule from Briscoe (@jaybriscoe84), who tweeted back, 'Man, who the fuck is this?'

For the world's information, the Texas indy wrestling revival that the state is currently experiencing is due in big part to Scot.  For many years, he not only bolstered various wrestling promotions by being on the card and delivering time after time, but has been there to mentor some of the names that are making a splash across the country, including rising national star ACH (who was a member of the DGAF Army with Summers and Masada).  Scot has also been under the wing of Jerry Lynn, who became Scot's mentor and guide in pro-wrestling.  Scot can mix it up with science on the mat, or go hardcore and sacrifice his body for the winner's purse at the pay window.

Teaming with the amazing wrestling talent and athlete 'The Ace' Ryan Genesis has only helped bring Scot to the next level.  Working together, the guys ran roughshod through Houston, Dallas, Temple, Austin, and San Antonio, and other parts of the state.  They even beat the 'Dark City Fight Club' for the NWA World Tag Titles.  And the moment they won the titles, they called out the big dogs of NJPW, The Killer Elite Squad (Lance Hoyt and DH Smith).  That match will be going down in April.
Two of the toughest dudes on Earth

But you can't take anything away from the Briscoes.  These crazy hillbillies from Sandy Fork, Delaware have matching skills on the mat, are total war brawlers, and can go hardcore if need be.  Like the KotU, they have a lot of respect for tradition.  The 'Terry Funk ain't wear no mouthpiece' promo puts on display not only the roughnecks in their natural environment, but the respectful attitude they have towards the tradition and spirit of pro-wrestling.

But I think the key reason this matchup will be one of the greatest matchups in Ring of Honor history, perhaps even up to this point in the current revival in Texas, is evident at 1:50 of the video.  When Jay says, "Does it look like stable thoughts go through my mind?  Do I look like a rational thinker to you?"

Look into this dude's eyes and ask that same question?

Ring of Honor, make this match happen.  Styles make for good matchups, and the brutal style of both these teams would prove to be an awesome collision.  You will not be disappointed.  You will see why Texas is one of the new hotbeds for wrestling, and one of the guys who helped make it happen.

FIGHTS: PREVIEW NWA 'Parade of Champions 2013'

by Bowie Ibarra
(as of 3/9/13)
(revised 3/31/13)
(revised 4/8/13)

One of the biggest events in independent wrestling history is going down April 20th in Houston, Texas.  The first of what I am hoping is an annual event, The NWA Houston Parade of Champions 2013 is going down with the biggest NWA pro-wrestling card in years.

ZombieBloodFights.com is pleased to present a preview of the great event that is poised to be a springboard for the future of the NWA.  Check it out.

NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
Rob Conway vs. Chris Masters

"Ironman" Rob Conway made it out of Japan with a win and the NWA World Title.  Now, he puts it up against his first domestic US opponent.

What was once an undercard matchup has now become a world title bout.  Conway was able to wrestle the title away from Kahagas only a day after Kahagas defended the belt in Houston against Texas standout, Ray Rowe.  Originally assigned to fight Jax Dane at a sanctioned NWA-Branded Outlaw Wrestling event, Dane had to drop his chance after being jumped by The Kingz of the Underground.  Conway was brought in as a last-minute replacement.

The fact remains that these two dudes are seasoned professionals and they are going to mix it up in one of the undercard matches.  Conway has been a presence on the San Antonio indy scene in NWA-BOW, and Masters has had a run across the world on the independent scene.  It will be a great matchup.

NWA National Championship Title Match
'The Texas Prodigy' Houston Carson vs. 'The Xperience' Damien Wayne (c)

'The Texas Prodigy' Houston Carson has only been around for a few years, but his talent and skill level has propelled him to great heights early.  Already a former NWA North American Champ, he's lined up to take on one of the east coasts best wrestlers.

Damien Wayne was a pinfall away from being crowned the NWA World Heavyweight Champ in a 8 man elimination tournament when Dontay Brown called the shady NWA President Bruce Tharpe, who allowed TokyoMonster Kahagas to be entered in the final at the last minute.

Since that debacle, he has earned the NWA National Championship title and has confirmed his legitimacy as a contender on the national scene.  Wayne thinks Carson is a 'pretty boy', and is ready to challenge the young Texan.  This matchup looks to be fantastic.

NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Championship
'Vanilla Godzilla' Jax Dane (C) vs. 'Canadian Lion' Lance Erikson

NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Champion 'Vanilla Godzilla' Jax Dane has been stomping competition across Texas for several years now.  A seasoned veteran, Dane has held titles across Texas and has faced some of the stiffest competition in the Lone Star State.  His power game in the ring is hard to overcome when opponents can't hold the ferocity off early.

But challenger 'The Canadian Lion' Lance Erickson believes he can match Dane's power game and up the ante on brutality.  Erickson was one of the people the NWA tapped to participate in the NWA World Heavyweight Title tournament as well, but didn't make it to the final.

Both wrestlers have been chomping at the bit to get at each other on the 20th, with lots of posturing and challenges via their Facebook profiles that are adding fuel to the fire.  This matchup looks to be competitive.

NWA NORTH AMERICAN TITLE MATCH
Former NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'Tokyo Monster' Kahagas
vs.
NWA North American Champion Byron Wilcott

The rumors are true.  NWA North American Champ, 'Addictive and Expensive' Byron Wilcott, has talked his way into a title match with former NWA Heavyweight Champ 'TokyoMonster' Kahagas.  But now, Wilcott is the only one with something big to lose going into this match after Kahagas lost the belt.

In spite of his shady start, Kahagas has proven to be a fighting champion, taking title defenses in NWA territories all across the US and even outside its borders, as per a quality NWA champ.  Up until he lost the belt to Conway, no one has been able to beat him yet.  Could his matchup the previous night with Rowe have taken some fight out of the champ?

Byron Wilcott might be arrogant, but he can back it up with skill, strength, and talent.  Since picking up the North American Title, his cocky attitude has turned up to 11 because now he's called for this match to be a unification match.

With the swiftness this challenge was accepted by the NWA championship committee, Wilcott needs to be careful when wrestling Kahagas, especially if Tharpe is the TokyoMonster's ace in the hole.  Take some time out of your wild lifestyle and read that contract, Wilcott.

INTER-PROMOTIONAL TITLE-FOR-TITLE MATCH
NWA World Tag Team Champions vs. IWGP World Tag Team Champions
'Kings of the Underground' Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis
vs.
'Killer Elite Squad' Lance Hoyt and DH Smith

If the previous booked matches did not pique your fancy, then there's no way this scheduled battle of titans can be ignored.  The current NWA World Tag Team Champions 'Kings of the Underground' Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis will be taking on the current New Japan Pro-Wrestling Tag Team Champs, 'The Killer Elite Squad' Lance Hoyt and DH Smith in a history-making inter-promotional match.

'Showtime' Scot Summers has been the foundation in which the revival of Texas independent wrestling was built on.  Both wrestling promotions and wrestlers have built their following and reputation off his back over the past few years.  He's wrestled greats like Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan, Nigel McGuinness, Claudio Castagnoli/Antonio Cesaro, Jimmy Jacobs, Chris Hero, and Jerry Lynn among others, and has been a springboard and mentor to fresh faces like ACH, who is taking the national scene by storm.  The guy might be batshit crazy, but he has the talent and skill to mix it up and win in any style, science or hardcore.

Combining this madman with another wild wrestler, Ryan Genesis, has been wrestling gold for this duo.  Genesis not only has amazing skills on the ground, but hand skills that are second to none in the wrestling business.  Genesis is a legit boxer that brings a serious striking aspect to his game in the ring.  Mixing it up with strikes with Genesis is a formula for disaster, and it has served the duo well.

And that's what makes this matchup with KES so titanic, because Hoyt and Smith are just as dangerous.

Lance Hoyt has been on the Texas indy scene for years and has seen its ups and downs.  Working across the state and country, he made waves in San Antonio and Dallas.  He was even called up to WWE for a run as well.  Its been in Japan with Hoyt that he's been able to excel.  With amazing size, agility, and speed for a big guy, he is one of the remaining wrestlers on the scene that has training by Shawn Micheals.

DH Smith is part of the sacred Hart Dungeon bloodline.  The guy has been around wrestling for all of his life.  With Davey Boy Smith's blood running through his veins, this run with the NJPW tag titles is only the beginning of a line of titles for the descendent of the British Bulldog.

This matchup, as well as the entire card, is not to be missed.  Titles might change hands by then.  But you can be assured of great matchups anyway.

Get your tickets today for this outstanding card and see why the revived NWA is turning heads and making waves on the indy scene.
