FIGHTS: Pacquiao/Marquez III fallout: Stop blaming judges.

Pacquiao/Marquez III was another great night of the science of boxing on display.  For twelve rounds, two of the best that ever stepped in the ring threw down for the glory of boxing.

The fallout from the match has been that people felt Marquez won yet again.  The judges gave the third title tilt a tie on one card, one card with Pac up two rounds, and another with Pac up six.

The fight was great, and a real contrast to their first two matches that were real sprints.  Both guys threw lots of hands all match long.  And both put their grit and technique on display, letting it all hang out.

This third matchup was run more like snipers in a combat zone than a sprint.  The fight I saw had both guys pacing themselves in the first three rounds.  Neither did anything to dominate the round, and were actually coin tosses.  Round four found Pacquiao opening up and dominating, with Marquez answering in the fifth.  And another flip-flop with Pac definitively taking six, and Marquez taking seven.

Then the rest of the fight was another sniper fest, with both fighters showing their experience and skill by picking their shots.  There were flurries, complete tributes to their previous fights where one would connect with multiple blows only to have the other answer with the same.  No one really won any more rounds definitively, and many could have gone either way.

Word comes that Marquez's cornerman, Nacho Berinstein, was telling Marquez he was winning.  It seems Marquez took those words to heart and might have put the fight on cruise control and did what he thought was enough to win rounds.  To many, that was really the time he needed to turn it up.

In the end, Pac thought he lost, Marquez thought he won, and it was handed to the judges that gave it to Pacquiao.

Many think Marquez won.  Others, Pac.  It really could have gone either way.

But these are the facts, and its the same thing I feel when UFC fans complain about matches decided by judges.

---  Close fights will tend to be judged to the person that, in the very least, was most aggressive.
---  The CompuStats show that even though the punch counts were close, Pacquiao still threw more punches.
---  When you put it in the hands of the judges, you can't complain, because if neither fighter did enough to win, then the order of battle states that the decision of the judges will determine the winner.

Don't get me wrong.  I wanted to see Marquez get a bit of vindication from the last two fights.  And, in fact, Pacquiao somehow seemed slower, allegedly hampered by a cramping foot.  So Marquez could have done it.

But if Marquez turned down the heat because of his corner's words, then the fault lies with Marquez.  Even though he was winning, he should have done more to make his victory emphatic, like the bad boy of boxing, Floyd Mayweather does.  Floyd might be a sonovabitch, but he finishes fights, even if they go to the cards.

Pacquiao does, too.  And even though many feel he doubted his inevitable victory, he also could have done more to make the victory definite in the eyes of the fans.

As it stands, Pac takes it in a close fight.  He can thank staying busy and, perhaps, being the champion, for providing the edge in the final decision.

FIGHTS: PREVIEW - ACW Lone Star Classic '11

If you claim to love pro-wrestling and live in the Austin area, then there's no excuse for you to miss out on this next event.  

The Anarchy Championship Wrestling tradition takes center bar this Saturday at Mohawk's  in Austin yet again.  The Lone Star Classic 2011 is tuning up to be another great night of wild action and great fun with the ACW SuperStars.  Here's what's on tap, apart from cheap pints of Hamm's, Coors Original, and 32's of Miller High Life that flow like a river.  And there's a lot at stake this year than just being crowned the LSC'11 Champ.

The official Anarchy Championship Website ( http://www.anarchychampionshipwrestling.com/ ) states the following:

"This year will be a 12-person tournament.  The first round will consist of four 3-way dances.  The 2nd round will consist of 2 one-on-one matches.  The finals will also be One-on-One.  The winner will walk out as ACW Heavyweight Champion."

You read that right!  The meglamanical metro-emo Darin Childs could potentially lose his title by the end of the first round.  And the competition is stacked.

The other 11 participants include a returning and healthy JT LaMotta; rare Jewish athlete and independent superstar Colt Cabana; ChrisTrew.dildo.tumblr.tx.edu/~dirtbag.com protege, the ever-dangerous Highroller Hayze; the always rough Shawn Vexxxxxxxxxxxxxx; homeless soup kitchen champ Gary Jay; the big man, Slim Sexy; the amazing ACH; the "always familiar with submissions in a broad sense" Pierre Abernathy; new slender sensation Bolt Brady; the stunning Rachel Summerlyn; and the 'With Leather' secret mascot and perpetually grouchy canuk, Portia Perez.

Before we get to the preview and predictions, lets talk the non-tourney matchups:

ACW Kingpin, 'Showtime' Scot Summers

In a non-tournament bout for a shot at the new champ, four competitors vie for the title shot.  The sensible Davey Vega takes on the not-as-sensible Matt Palmer, vs. the batshit crazy wildman Scot Summers vs. the certifiable insane hardcore maniac, Masada.  Winner gets a shot at the LSC'11 title holder.

I have to say I think all these guys are great, and some of my favorites to watch every time I come to ACW. With that said, as I intimated above, Vega is the most sane of the bunch here, which really plays against him this time around.  Palmer pushed him over the edge when Vega won the title, but that was one-on-one.  And Vega has put it on the line against Summers and Masada, earning their respect.

But there's an old expression that says, "When a sane dog fights a mad dog, its the mad dog's ear that's clipped".  My pick is the certifiably insane Summers, who could take it if he lets Palmer's vendetta against Masada play out, letting them beat each other into oblivion, Summers can then match science with Vega.  If he can keep Vega grounded and use his power, he could take it.

EVAN GELISTICO puts his St. Louis Anarchy Title on the line against the always game MATT FITCHETT.  Fitchett has been great, but I think the dastardly Gelistico will counter Fitchett's wild style with science and take the win.

No stopping Athena

ATHENA puts her title on the line against the angry Inuit ANGEL BLUE.  Athena has fought long and hard to get her hands on the title, and I don't see her losing it any time soon.  Athena takes it.

The Lone Star Classic 2011 First Round Matchups
The opening round matchups were announced today, and here's a preview and predictions:

ACH vs. Colt Cabana vs. Bolt Brady
Great opening round matchup between some well-conditioned superstars.  Bolt has done some good work throughout Texas, and he seems to be adjusting to the wild nature of the ACW arena.  ACH has done nothing but improve and grow since I first saw him take on the always dangerous resident asshole, Jaykus Plyskin, two years ago at the annual Christmas bash, and has been synonymous with ACW for the past year.

But the Fightin' Israelite, Colt Cabana, has seen it all, and will be an unfamiliar opponent to Brady and ACH if they haven't really sat down and studied tape and YouTube clips of Cabana.

I see a great battle between these three, but I put my money (no pun intended) on the wild Jew, Colt Cabana, who will advance.

GARY JAY vs. SLIM SEXY vs. PIERRE ABERNATHY
Considering that Gerald James and Pierre Abernathy are tag team partners, you would think Slim Sexy would not have a chance here.  But I believe Slim could take this one with a combination of his power advantage and being one step ahead of the Submission Squad buddies.  Pierre and Gary have been known to play too much while in the ring.  And though having fun is a big part of it, if their eyes are not on that ultimate prize of taking Child's Title away, Sexy is going to beat them.

The key here will be how much Sexy will have recovered from his battle with Childs at Fun-Fun Fest, as Child's power put Sexy to the test.

My pick here is 'Big Pink', Slim Sexy

SHAWN VEXX vs. JT LaMOTTA vs. HIGHROLLER HAYZE (w/ChrisTrew.douchebag.tv(?))
Shawn Vexx can bring the heat when needed.  You need to look no further than his most recent match with Scot Summers to see that.  And JT LaMotta has no problem hanging with some of the best in pro-wrestling.  He might be a dick, but he proves again and again each time he steps in the ring that he's an amazing athlete that will do what he has to do to win.

It's the upstart Highroller Hayze that will determine the outcome of this match.  He's been on the rise as of late, bringing a cruelty and brutality to the ring that is part technician, part sadist, all crappy tattoos.  The acquisition of his wrestling contract by the notorious anti-hipster hipster douchebag, ChrisTrew.tx.edu/~junkie.com and his stable, the so-called "The Business", has raised his stock in ACW.

If Hayze can focus his attack on what made him a strong up-and-comer by matching Vexx's speed and LaMotta's cruelty, which he is completely capable of, and ignore his manager's cockamamie business decisions at ringside (at least in the first round), Hayze might take this.

But if his unqualified and unscrupulous manager tries to make an executive decision that takes Hayze out of his rhythm, then Vexx takes this one.  I just don't see LaMotta, coming back strong but with ring rust, getting a win here on lazy legs.

PORTIA PEREZ vs. RACHEL SUMMERLYN vs. DARIN CHILDS
After Fun Fun Fest, Slim Sexy tweeted at how amazed he was at the power of Darin Childs.  And that's what could initially have anyone see the obvious winner of this match 'could' be.

But you have to consider Rachel Summerlyn.  She can match most men in ACW strike for strike.  She also needed to be put through a barbed-wire barrier (of her own creation) against ACW madman Scot Summers to be put down for the pin.  That was in a grudge match a month after she split open Summers like Jason in a Friday the 13th movie before choking him out in the middle of the blood-stained ring.  She can compete, power-wise, and might hold the edge in being able to take it to that next level, especially against men.

Perez, who is in phenomenal shape with bullet-proof abs and 'guns' that make my arms look like toy pistols, will dominate the speed game.  She will have to use that advantage to negate Rachel and Darin's power.  And it might be a bad idea for her to use that damn wrench, as Childs and Summerlyn have no problem escalating the conflict with weapons of sinister design.

With that said, Perez has one advantage.  In spite of his hardcore metro-emo image, Darin Child's has shown multiple times a soft-spot for the Queen of IHOP, Summerlyn.  Multiple times, Childs has hit the ring when Rachel was under attack, or had been injured.  He's shown great concern for Rachel, telling me there's some kind of hearfelt concern for her.

If Perez can exploit that somehow, take Childs out of his game by hurting Rachel, Perez might be able to take the victory.  Considering the lengths Perez has gone to recently for victory, Childs needs to get his mind right and decide if something like that should happen, what matters more to him:  His friend, or his belt.

If not Perez, Childs takes this one.

After that, its all up in the air.  I'm not sure how the matchups will be set up after that.  But I do believe, by the end of the night, if he can finish his matches as fast as possible, Slim Sexy will take the bragging rights of being  Lone Star Classic '11 winner and new ACW champ.

His opponent?  Darin Childs or Portia Perez.

ZOMBIES: Recap - The Walking Dead "Cherokee Rose" Ep. 4, Season 2

Sunday night has come and gone, and yet another great episode of "The Walking Dead" has played to its legion of zombie fans.  In brief, the little girl is still lost, it appears that Shane needs to just keep his mouth shut before people can smell the guilt on his breath, the boy recovers from the gunshot wound, and a little reminder of a story gap involving Daryl from last season is teased with the discovery of a rare "Cherokee Rose".  The symbolic flower was a great metaphor for the plight the group is in.

There was also a dead guy in the water well of the farm that the fun bunch thought would be a good idea to pull out.  Well, apart from the already open wounds on the zombie that had passed on enough blood-bourne pathogens to infect all of Asia, they decided to try to pull it out.  That didn't turn out so well.

But one of the fun parts of the show was when Glenn went into town with the 'farmer's daughter', as he called her.  He was sent on a mission by Lori to find a 'feminine product'.  While he found it at the pharmacy with Maggie, the "FDILF" if you will, his dream comes true as he accidentally had a box of condoms in his hand and Maggie caught him with them.  It didn't take much for her to pitch a little afternoon zpoc delight in the pharmacy with Glenn, who gladly obliged.

Let's face it, people.  The zpoc is going to suck.  And when you have some down time away from the terror of the dead rising from the grave to attack the living, you're going to want to relax.  We're humans.  We have human emotions and will always have human impulses we have to deal with.  We're still wired to survive, and part of survival is reproduction.  And if the product of reproduction wasn't so much fun in its initial stages, we wouldn't be here right now.  It's a fact that the joy of sex perpetuates our human existence.  That's part of evolution.

I appreciate The Walking Dead for including this very human theme in the story.  It's a theme that I explored in the zombie title "Down the Road".  Some people didn't quite appreciate those elements of the classic Permuted Press title.  Admittedly, the moments could have been carved out better to tell the story.  But they were included nonetheless.  I make no apologies for them.  Those things happen.  People have sex.

C'mon, they're young and could be eaten alive tomorrow.  Why not?  It's the old "who would you do if there would be a nuclear war" fantasy come to life in the ZPoc.  I might be a little sick in the head, but I know for a fact I'm not the only one.

The upcoming zpoc is, predictably, going to be quite horrible.  In spite of that horror, its nice to see two adults living in the moment, being responsible, and remembering what it's like to be human again in a world filled with the dead.

Also, on that reproduction/survival note, the feminine product Glenn brought back was a birth control kit.  It looks like Lori's knocked up by Shane.  Her man still has no idea about their fling during his time in the hospital.

If you like zombies and great storytelling, tune it if you haven't now.

And here's to you, Glenn and Maggie.

FIGHTS: 24/7 Pac-Marquez, Ep. 2 Recap

This superfight is on the way in just a few short weeks, and the lead up has been great.

This episode talked up Manny's charity work back in the Philippines, helping to finance citizen's fishing boats and providing funds for a large-scale hospital and helping local schools.  He has earned enough cash through his fights to help people back home, and provide for himself a Ferrari as well.  He gets a chance to drive the car near the end of the episode.

Marquez is also working hard, and has fought and earned money for a small fleet of cars back in Mexico. Five cars are featured, but he can only drive four of them, as his wife is the only one that drives the BMW.

Marquez is also training hard as well, and has made some adjustments to his training via new strength and conditioning coach.  Coach Hernandez earned his degree at A&M, and has altered some of Marquez's workouts so he can keep his speed and flexibility, but add weight.

In the end, its yet another great episode leading up to the fight that you need to watch.

ZOMBIES: 'Night of the Living Dead' - The Classic Reviewed

HEADSHOTS, MATRICIDE, AND THE ORIGIN OF ZOMBIE HORROR

It's the very movie that forever made me a fan of zombie horror.  If you expect me to stamp your zombie horror membership card, you need to have watched this movie first.

It was Halloween week, and I had to be in Jr. High.  The TV station out of San Antonio was playing a weeks worth of scary movies.  Some of them included the original Prom Night, Halloween II, and this one; Night of the Living Dead.

My first thoughts were, "Well, this is black and white.  It's probably going to be lame like 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' or "The Mummy' movies.

So, it got started, with Barbara and Johnny, a brother and sister duo sent to put flowers on their fathers grave miles away from home.  The brother complains and the sister tries to remain respectful.  When they both see a guy walking in the cemetary, Johnny teases his sister with the now famous phrase, "They're coming to get you, Barbara."

So, the dude they were teasing in the cemetary turns out to be a zombie and attacks Barbara.  Now, big brother comes in for the save, only to get ko'd in the scuffle on a tombstone by the zombie.  It's then that the zombie gives chase to Barbara.

Fun fact straight from the mouth of Judith O'Dea, the lady who played Barbara.  She told me that when the scene was going to be shot, she could not run in the pumps she was wearing.  So Romero plugged in a shot where she falls, looks back to see the zombie on her tail, and kicks off her pumps.

After a long chase in which the zombie uses a rock to try and break through the glass of her brother's vehicle, she ends up at a farmhouse.  She finds that the farmhouse is also suffering from the peculiar murders, finding a partially devoured body at the top of the stairs.

When she freaks out and goes back down the stairs, she runs out to find a vehicle pulling up to the house.  Driving the vehicle is a guy named Ben, who gets back inside with Barbara, who is losing her mind.  Ben decides to clear house, as more of the ghouls are on the way.  

One of the best shots in the film is when Duane pegs a zombie coming in the back door with a tire iron.  As the zombie stumbles back, it reveals even more zombies on the way.  They're slowly being surrounded.

After Ben spends time securing the bottom floor, a group of people reveal themselves, who were hiding in the basement.  It's a family with child named the Coopers and a couple, Tom and Judy.

As you might imagine, a philosophical battle over what place is safer begins, and Ben exiles Mr. Cooper to the basement with his sick daughter and wife.  

It turns out Mr. Cooper and his wife, Helen, don't get along.  And their daughter is slowly expiring after having being bit by one of the zombies.

After a failed run for a gas pump out by the barn that takes the lives of Tom and Judy, tension between Ben and Mr. Cooper reach a fever pitch as the zombies make their move and turn up the heat on the siege by trying to break down the barriers.

With the pressure on, Cooper and Tom fight over the Winchester lever action rifle, and after laying claim to the rifle, Ben puts a bullet in Cooper, who then stumbles back down to the basement and dies at the feet of his daughter.

The barriers start to fall to the encroaching zombie mob, and Helen is almost dragged out.  But Barbara makes the save, giving Helen a chance to break away.  As Helen breaks away, Barbara is stunned to see her dead brother at the door.  Paralyzed in fear and surprise, it gives her brother and the zombies time to drag her out into the mob to be eaten.

Meanwhile, Helen retreats to the basement to find her daughter eating her dead husband.  She stands in shock as her daughter rises.  Losing her balance, Helen falls by the steps in horror as her daughter takes a garden trowel off the wall, raises it above her head, and proceeds to stab her mother to death multiple times.  A nightmarish squeal accompanies the matricide.

Upstairs, Ben has lost control.  With every barrier breached, its now his Alamo.  In a cruel twist of fate, he ironically retreats to the basement.  He is assaulted by the dead Cooper daughter, but bypasses her and locks himself in the basement.

The next morning, the locals have formed death squads to squash the zombies, and they're all doing pretty good.  As they approach the farmhouse, Ben can hear the gunshots and dogs barking.  So he steps out of the basement with extreme caution.

The problem is that the death squads had been putting down zombies all day and one of them heard Ben moving inside the house.  As Ben looks out the window, he silhouettes himself for one of the dudes to take aim and put him down.  They then throw his body on a bonfire along with the very same zombie that killed Barbara's brother in the cemetery.  They are then burned.

So, it certainly wasn't exactly like I expected.  It was much worse, and it was great.  That final moment where Ben gets shot shocked me like no other movie had done before, or since.  It's that kind of ending that I wanted to bring to my stories.

We could get into metaphors, symbolism, or social commentary all day.  But we'd just be treading on ground that has been walked before.

The bottom line is that this is the one seminal movie that started the zombie horror genre we are experiencing and enjoying today.  If it wasn't for Romero, we would not have Fulci, we would not have O'Bannon's "Return..." series, we would not have "The Walking Dead".  It starts here.

That's why I say Romero is what God looks like.

ZOMBIES: The Double Cross! Walking Dead Season 2 Ep.3 recap...

Three episodes in to "The Walking Dead", and each time they have upped the ante on the moral dilemmas the  upcoming Zombie Apocalypse would provide to each and every one of us.

So, to start things off, we still have the missing little girl Sophie in the woods somewhere, the little boy Carl is suffering from his bullet wound, and the cast trying to make it through another day.

But the main thread of the episode was the run Shane made with the relative stranger (and guy who accidentally shot Carl), Otis.  They made a run to get medical supplies at a nearby high school.

In the ensuing mission, both Shane and Otis' ankles were injured, slowing them down significantly.  Initially working together, the two were doing alright in spite of the odds.  Both wanted desperately to help the little boy, with Otis specifically stating that the danger didn't matter to him, as he wanted to make right by Carl.

On their run back to their escape vehicle, Otis showed his weakness that he was not only working with an injured ankle, but was also out of shape.

With the walking dead closing in on them, Shane felt he had to make a choice.  Knowing he had to get the supplies back to the hideout, he put a slug in Otis' leg, took the supplies, and left him to be devoured by the dead.

When he returned, he told most of the story about how Otis died, and the kid got the medical equipment and remedies needed for the vet-turned-surgeon to save Carl, which he did.

People had a problem with Shane's choice.  In fact, I did, too.  But you have to put things in perspective.

Shane might not be the kids dad, but he clearly has a strong emotional tie to the boy and his mother, Lori, who he was banging out for a time before Rick returned.

After talking it over with a friend, we have to come to terms with things.  In fact, its a clear theme that I have explored in my books, especially "The Fall of Austin".

The Z-poc brings about a shift in morality.  A 'Rule Change' as I like to call it.  In fact, rules are thrown out the door, and the only rule is 'survival'.

Shane had no emotional ties to Otis.  Shane needed to get that equipment to the boy he cared deeply about.  Knowing Otis was wounded and was holding him back, he had to make a hard choice.  Do I roll the dice and help the injured Otis and take a chance I won't make it back?  Or do I cut my losses and give myself the extra edge to guarantee I get back?

If Otis were a close friend or a family member?  Sure, you spin the wheel.

But he wasn't.  Shane made the call, and now has to live with it.

FIGHTS: A Clarification - I am not calling out Phoenix Jones' Super Friend...

I just want to make something very clear here.

I've been getting a few messages stating why I was calling out El Caballero.

When I sent the following message to Phoenix Jones, leader of the Rain City Superhero Movement on their Facebook group page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Phoenix-Jones/131083536954406 ) , I was in no way calling out his super friend, El Caballero.  Before I go on, I think the message speaks for itself.

El Caballero.  Perhaps simply uninformed of
the tradition and history of the mask he dons

Phoenix Jones,

It was great to see you and your superteam, The Rain City Superhero Movement, make an appearance at ZomBcon.

With respect, I have a concern. One of your team members was wearing an Ultimo Dragon mask.

I understand that you are a superteam, and represent some of the masked traditions of the decades-old folklore of superheroes.

But that mask represents a storied lucha libre history and tradition that Ultimo Dragon worked hard to obtain. He is one of the greatest luchadores to grace the squared circle.

May I respectfully suggest your teammate alter or adjust the design of the mask so that it does not represent Ultimo Dragon but the spirit of your teammate.

You and your superteam embody the noble values found in the tradition of superheroes. A ask you to please respect the equally noble and storied tradition of the lucha libre legends who have shared their magic all around the world.

Look, I have no problem with what they are doing.  In fact, I wholeheartedly support their dangerous endeavor that provides protection in their community.

I don't mind people playing around with masks, at events or even with their friends.  In fact, my buddy got a hold of a Dos Caras mask a while back while on a photo shoot.  He was just having some fun.


I just strongly feel when you utilize an established masked persona to fight crime, its important to consider what that mask represents around the world.  In fact, what it could mean to the true owner of the mask if he were to find out.

So I respectfully feel El Caballero needs to create his own design for a mask and start HIS own legacy with his superteam.  The mask he was wearing at zomBcon represents one of the greatest and most decorated pro-wrestlers to ever step in the ring.  I feel once he understands this, he can make an informed choice.

In fact, here's a link to a reputable website that offers custom mask creation.  They can create a professional grade mask to his exact specifications, perfect for fighting crime.

So just some clarification.  I feel so strong about this idea I would go to an extreme.  In the tradition of Mexican lucha libre, I would put my hair on the line for his mask in a best of three match.


But I'm too old and too out of shape for fighting.  And I believe these men, who have such respect for the superhero traditions, will also respect the traditions of the sacred masks of lucha libre once they understand what the masks stand for.
