FIGHTS: REVIEW - NWA 'INVASION' 2013 DVD ROCKS!

NEW JAPAN STOMPS INTO TEXAS TO TAKE ON SOME OF THE NWA'S BIG NAMES
By
Bowie V. Ibarra

It's over a year in and the National Wrestling Alliance keeps chugging along in spite of all the folks and many of my fellow 'marks' who thought the NWA couldn't keep it together long enough.  It's clear Tony Brooklyn and Bruce Tharpe are doing what it takes to keep the tradition of not only the NWA alive, but of straight pro-wrestling.  The matches are very 'entertaining', but continue to emphasize the wrestling aspect of its sacred grappling tradition.

Recently, NWA - Houston promoted an event featuring the stars of New Japan Pro-Wrestling taking on some of the best on the US NWA scene.  'NWA Invasion 2013' was an outstanding event, and yet another example of how not only the NWA is providing amazing quality pro-wrestling, but yet another sterling example of how pro-wrestling in Texas is alive and well.

Here are some notes on the DVD:

TOP QUALITY PRODUCTION VALUES

The DVD is skillfully put together with amazing graphics from Diet Productions.  The video quality exceeds the normal standard for independent pro-wrestling DVD quality.  In fact, the production values eclipse ROH DVDs that I've seen.

WEIRD TO SAY, BUT ADVERTISEMENTS

Between each match is a professional advertisement for sponsors for NWA Houston.  I don't know about you, but I'm very happy to see that.  It shows that NWA Houston has a pretty nice budget and are taking care of the wrestlers, in my opinion.  It's very smart, and shows the NWA knows how good businesses are run.

OUTSTANDING CARD OF THE BEST FROM JAPAN, TEXAS, AND ACROSS THE US

Look at this card:

TEACHER VS. STUDENT MATCH
Lou Marconi vs. Raymond Rowe

'The Sons of Texas' Cowboy Claxton/Alex Reigns
vs.
'The Lords of Chaos' Damien Wayne/Lance Erikson

INTERNATIONAL TAG MATCHUP
Gedo/Watanabe
vs.
'Kingz of the Underground' Scot Summers/Ryan Genesis

Jax Dane vs. Michael Tarver

WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Jushin 'Thunder' Liger/Hiroyoshi Tenzan
vs.
'Killer Elite Squad' Lance Hoyt/Davey Boy Smith, Jr.

WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Chase Owens vs. Jason Kincaid

NO DISQUALIFICATION
NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Rob Conway vs. Byron Wilcott

THE TEXAS FANS

One of the best parts of this DVD is listening to the fans and hearing how much they are into the matches.  As a Texas fan, I know how much we let ourselves get into the matches and how much fun can be had at these events.  I've seen some other DVD's where it seems like the fans are sitting on their hands.  But this is a lively crowd, including a hilarious group 'Thank You' every time the ringside timekeeper gives the current minutes of the match.  The 'over here' chant during the Jr. Heavyweight Belt retirement ceremony was pretty funny as well.

THE WRESTLING

From the first match to the end, the wrestlers competing on the card deliver when it comes to great wrestling.

In short, the NWA Invasion DVD is a great souvenir of this historic event that emphasizes outstanding wrestling in the tradition of the National Wrestling Alliance.  It is completely ZombieBloodFights.com approved.  If you're a fan

FIGHTS: REVIEW - NWA Parade of Champions 2013 DVD

PRODUCTION QUALITY, SCIENTIFIC WRESTLING PUT TRADITIONAL NWA-STYLE GRAPPLING IN THE SPOTLIGHT
by
Bowie V. Ibarra

Saturday, April 20th, 2013, the NWA put on one of their greatest shows in their return to the pro-wrestling scene.  The 2013 NWA Parade of Champions was an event I was dying to attend, but missed out on even though I bought a front-row ticket.  But I was at least able to get the DVD, and I was not only impressed by the show, but the DVD itself.

THE MATCHUPS

TAG TEAM MATCHUP
RUDY RUSSO/JACK JAMESON vs. DAVE DUPERON/JASPER DAVIS

NWA LONESTAR JR. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
RAY ROWE w/Samantha Ann vs. MIKE DELL (c) w/Barbie Hayden

NWA NATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
DAMIEN WAYNE (C) vs. HOUSTON CARSON w/Barbie Hayden

NWA NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP]
BYRON WILCOTT (c) vs. KAHAGAS

NWA TAG TITLES vs. NJPW TAG TITLES
KINGZ OF THE UNDERGROUND (SUMMERS/GENESIS - NWA)
vs.
KILLER ELITE SQUAD (ARCHER/SMITH - NJPW)

NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
ROB CONWAY (C) vs. CHRIS ADONIS

DVD QUALITY

The DVD was put together very well.  HD cameras were used to record the action.  The DVD screen was basic, but overall quality of the show was outstanding for an independent production.  There are several camera angles used, and the hand helds do a good job of catching the action without being shaky.

The announcer, Matt Topolski, did a pretty good job as well running by himself.  Although I think he was a little excitable and could have saved that enthusiasm for the end of the matches instead of a collar and elbow tie up at the start of matches.

The show took place at an indoor sports venue.  The independent vibe is strong in the scene.  The turnout was good as well, and as per south Texas crowds, they were vocal and enthusiastic.

Viewers will also note commercials by the sponsors of the show.  That was a fun and different thing to see, and smart as well.

MATCH QUALITY

All in all, the quality of the matches was top notch.  The opening tag tilt was a fun start, while Rowe and Dell set the bar high for the proceeding matches.  The Wayne and Carson matchup was good, and though Kahagas and Wilcott took some time to find their rhythm, it was still an enjoyable match.

The Kingz of the Underground and Killer Elite Squad knocked it out of the park, and though the main event match was set up a few weeks before, it was still a good scientific matchup.

All in all, the show was outstanding, and a great example of the NWA product in Texas. Lots of folks hate on the NWA for whatever reason.  My guess is 9/10 times, those people haven't seen the quality the NWA produces, and most definitely haven't seen the talent in Texas and how great they are.  This DVD is a fine example of the standard of scientific wrestling the NWA wants to set, and a great and enjoyable independent wrestling show.

FIGHTS: Will the NWA's Master Plan in New Japan blow up in their face?

by Bowie Ibarra

Newly-crowned NWA champ 'The Ironman' Rob Conway will be the NWA's representative going into this weekend's NJPW Supershow, 'Invasion Attack'.  The word on the street is that he'll be facing NJPW stalwart, Satoshi Kojima, who is not only a vet in the ring, but has a lariat that would make Stan Hanson proud.  It's a big weekend for wrestling fans, but also a big weekend for Conway.

You might remember when the NWA President Bruce Tharpe took to the YouTubes to call out NJPW and insult them and their fans with his planned run at their organization.  I couldn't help but notice Tharpe didn't have then-champ 'Tokyo Monster' Kahagas present for the taping.  When I saw that, there was a sense that Tharpe was holding his cards to the vest.  He fast-tracked Kahagas to the championship belt only months before in a 16-man title tournament that had Kahagas show up in the final by his decree.

Did Tharpe lose confidence in his golden boy?  Was he just holding his cards to the vest, knowing that Kahagas was, indeed, a fighting champion and, knowing his schedule, considered that Kahagas might lose the belt somewhere along the way?

Either way, Tharpe has pushed all in with the new champ, Rob Conway.

Rob Conway?  I know, right?

Wrestling fans outside of San Antonio might remember Rob Conway as an arrogant WWE wrestler.  He's gone on the indy wrestling circuit for some years now, keeping his skills sharp and waiting for an opportunity.

It came March 16 when then champ Kahagas was set to face challenger NWA-Branded Outlaw Heavyweight Champ Jax Dane.  When Dane was jumped by the NWA World Tag Champs The Kingz of the Underground, taking Dane out of contention, Conway was granted a shot and won.

Check out the historic match here:

Say what you will about Rob Conway, but the fact remains that the guy was able to take that golden opportunity and cash it out.  The guy has been looking for a big break for a while now, and he got it.

But now his first title defense is going to test not only Conway, but an entire organization.  The NWA invading Japan could be great, or it could fizzle out.  A lot of that rests on Conway's performance against the tough-as-nails Kojima.

But is Conway ready?  It's my opinion that he is.

Let's face it, the guy was able to beat Kahagas, who was on an unbeaten streak since he won the belt late last year.  Kahagas might have got the belt under shady circumstances, thanks to Tharpe.  But he still showed he was a quality champ by defending it all over the US.

Conway is a good representative for the NWA in Japan.  He has WWE credentials, has kept his skills sharp since then, and has the potential to do well.

Ironically enough, 'The Vanilla Godzilla' Jax Dane will be at his side as they travel to the Land of the Rising Sun.

When put in perspective, this is the opportunity Conway has been waiting for years to have.  Now that NWA has given him the ball, here's hoping he makes it out of Japan healthy and with a victory for NWA.

That win alone will easily propel him to a great title run as NWA champ.

Best of luck, champ.

FIGHTS: PREVIEW NWA 'Parade of Champions 2013'

by Bowie Ibarra
(as of 3/9/13)
(revised 3/31/13)
(revised 4/8/13)

One of the biggest events in independent wrestling history is going down April 20th in Houston, Texas.  The first of what I am hoping is an annual event, The NWA Houston Parade of Champions 2013 is going down with the biggest NWA pro-wrestling card in years.

ZombieBloodFights.com is pleased to present a preview of the great event that is poised to be a springboard for the future of the NWA.  Check it out.

NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
Rob Conway vs. Chris Masters

"Ironman" Rob Conway made it out of Japan with a win and the NWA World Title.  Now, he puts it up against his first domestic US opponent.

What was once an undercard matchup has now become a world title bout.  Conway was able to wrestle the title away from Kahagas only a day after Kahagas defended the belt in Houston against Texas standout, Ray Rowe.  Originally assigned to fight Jax Dane at a sanctioned NWA-Branded Outlaw Wrestling event, Dane had to drop his chance after being jumped by The Kingz of the Underground.  Conway was brought in as a last-minute replacement.

The fact remains that these two dudes are seasoned professionals and they are going to mix it up in one of the undercard matches.  Conway has been a presence on the San Antonio indy scene in NWA-BOW, and Masters has had a run across the world on the independent scene.  It will be a great matchup.

NWA National Championship Title Match
'The Texas Prodigy' Houston Carson vs. 'The Xperience' Damien Wayne (c)

'The Texas Prodigy' Houston Carson has only been around for a few years, but his talent and skill level has propelled him to great heights early.  Already a former NWA North American Champ, he's lined up to take on one of the east coasts best wrestlers.

Damien Wayne was a pinfall away from being crowned the NWA World Heavyweight Champ in a 8 man elimination tournament when Dontay Brown called the shady NWA President Bruce Tharpe, who allowed TokyoMonster Kahagas to be entered in the final at the last minute.

Since that debacle, he has earned the NWA National Championship title and has confirmed his legitimacy as a contender on the national scene.  Wayne thinks Carson is a 'pretty boy', and is ready to challenge the young Texan.  This matchup looks to be fantastic.

NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Championship
'Vanilla Godzilla' Jax Dane (C) vs. 'Canadian Lion' Lance Erikson

NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Champion 'Vanilla Godzilla' Jax Dane has been stomping competition across Texas for several years now.  A seasoned veteran, Dane has held titles across Texas and has faced some of the stiffest competition in the Lone Star State.  His power game in the ring is hard to overcome when opponents can't hold the ferocity off early.

But challenger 'The Canadian Lion' Lance Erickson believes he can match Dane's power game and up the ante on brutality.  Erickson was one of the people the NWA tapped to participate in the NWA World Heavyweight Title tournament as well, but didn't make it to the final.

Both wrestlers have been chomping at the bit to get at each other on the 20th, with lots of posturing and challenges via their Facebook profiles that are adding fuel to the fire.  This matchup looks to be competitive.

NWA NORTH AMERICAN TITLE MATCH
Former NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'Tokyo Monster' Kahagas
vs.
NWA North American Champion Byron Wilcott

The rumors are true.  NWA North American Champ, 'Addictive and Expensive' Byron Wilcott, has talked his way into a title match with former NWA Heavyweight Champ 'TokyoMonster' Kahagas.  But now, Wilcott is the only one with something big to lose going into this match after Kahagas lost the belt.

In spite of his shady start, Kahagas has proven to be a fighting champion, taking title defenses in NWA territories all across the US and even outside its borders, as per a quality NWA champ.  Up until he lost the belt to Conway, no one has been able to beat him yet.  Could his matchup the previous night with Rowe have taken some fight out of the champ?

Byron Wilcott might be arrogant, but he can back it up with skill, strength, and talent.  Since picking up the North American Title, his cocky attitude has turned up to 11 because now he's called for this match to be a unification match.

With the swiftness this challenge was accepted by the NWA championship committee, Wilcott needs to be careful when wrestling Kahagas, especially if Tharpe is the TokyoMonster's ace in the hole.  Take some time out of your wild lifestyle and read that contract, Wilcott.

INTER-PROMOTIONAL TITLE-FOR-TITLE MATCH
NWA World Tag Team Champions vs. IWGP World Tag Team Champions
'Kings of the Underground' Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis
vs.
'Killer Elite Squad' Lance Hoyt and DH Smith

If the previous booked matches did not pique your fancy, then there's no way this scheduled battle of titans can be ignored.  The current NWA World Tag Team Champions 'Kings of the Underground' Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis will be taking on the current New Japan Pro-Wrestling Tag Team Champs, 'The Killer Elite Squad' Lance Hoyt and DH Smith in a history-making inter-promotional match.

'Showtime' Scot Summers has been the foundation in which the revival of Texas independent wrestling was built on.  Both wrestling promotions and wrestlers have built their following and reputation off his back over the past few years.  He's wrestled greats like Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan, Nigel McGuinness, Claudio Castagnoli/Antonio Cesaro, Jimmy Jacobs, Chris Hero, and Jerry Lynn among others, and has been a springboard and mentor to fresh faces like ACH, who is taking the national scene by storm.  The guy might be batshit crazy, but he has the talent and skill to mix it up and win in any style, science or hardcore.

Combining this madman with another wild wrestler, Ryan Genesis, has been wrestling gold for this duo.  Genesis not only has amazing skills on the ground, but hand skills that are second to none in the wrestling business.  Genesis is a legit boxer that brings a serious striking aspect to his game in the ring.  Mixing it up with strikes with Genesis is a formula for disaster, and it has served the duo well.

And that's what makes this matchup with KES so titanic, because Hoyt and Smith are just as dangerous.

Lance Hoyt has been on the Texas indy scene for years and has seen its ups and downs.  Working across the state and country, he made waves in San Antonio and Dallas.  He was even called up to WWE for a run as well.  Its been in Japan with Hoyt that he's been able to excel.  With amazing size, agility, and speed for a big guy, he is one of the remaining wrestlers on the scene that has training by Shawn Micheals.

DH Smith is part of the sacred Hart Dungeon bloodline.  The guy has been around wrestling for all of his life.  With Davey Boy Smith's blood running through his veins, this run with the NJPW tag titles is only the beginning of a line of titles for the descendent of the British Bulldog.

This matchup, as well as the entire card, is not to be missed.  Titles might change hands by then.  But you can be assured of great matchups anyway.

Get your tickets today for this outstanding card and see why the revived NWA is turning heads and making waves on the indy scene.

FIGHTS: Is NWA Pres. Bruce Tharpe writing checks his ass can't cash?

by Bowie Ibarra

National Wrestling Alliance President Bruce Tharpe has made no effort to endear himself to fans or promoters.  But that's hasn't been his top priority from day one, it seems.

To catch you up on the controversial Tharpe, he's a lawyer that finagled all the rights of the NWA out of the hands of the previous owners and taken it for himself.  Crushing promotion and promoters who were not ready to work towards his vision, he even went as far as changing the outcome of the NWA world title match by allowing Kahagas to enter the finals of the elimination tournament fresh and defeat Chance Prophet and Damien Wayne.

At any rate, his NWA has moved forward, and is proving prosperous in the state of Texas as well as other satellite franchises around the country and even outside the continental US (Kahagas is even defending his NWA title in the Dominican Republic).

But now, Tharpe is yanking the chain of one of the big dogs of international pro-wrestling notoriety:  New Japan Pro-Wrestling.  Yes, that NJPW.

Check out this video Tharpe sent to the organization, talking trash to non-English speakers and one of the world's leaders in outstanding pro-wrestling and threatening an invasion:

Clearly, Tharpe's holding his cards to the vest by not identifying who will be the NWA's choice to pit against all challenges in NJPW.  But holding the 10lbs. of gold makes it clear its probably going to be TokyoMonster Kahagas.

Or will it?

Tharpe has proven himself to be a shady mother f**ker, so who knows what he has up his sleeve.

But is he writing a check the NWA can't cash?  Not necessarily.

People have been writing off NWA as a joke for years now, and people can have their opinions, which is fine.  Just because some big names in indy wrestling took a big dump on the title and tradition (yes, I'm pointing out the talented Colt Cabana and Adam Pierce) doesn't mean the people hoisting the mantle of the NWA are bums.  Here's my opinion based off of what I've actually seen from the organization live and in person.

The heavy hitters in the NWA are legit.  Look at this list (as of this writing 3/5/13):

NWA World Heavyweight Champ:  Kahagas
NWA World Tag Team Champs:  Kings of the Underground Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis
NWA National Heavyweight Champ: Damien Wayne
NWA North American Champ:  Byron Wilcott
Regional Title holder out of San Antonio, Texas, NWA-Branded Outlaw Heavyweight Champ Jax Dane

Any of these champs could hang with the best NJPW has to offer.  So Tharpe might be talking trash, but he has talent that can actually back it up.

Tharpe might be a ruthless jerk, but the promotions that don't want to follow his lead can do their own thing.  Many have.  The one's that stick with it will reap the benefits.  And the NWAs probably better off letting the ones that cashed out go their own way.  The less shitty backwoods wrestling promotions who can't hang with the standards the NWA is touting, the better.

Let's face it:  Vince McMahon didn't get to the place that he got to by being nice.

I, for one, want to see it flourish again.  The NWA and its long tradition is one of the most beautiful pieces of wrestling history.  And even though one of the biggest assholes in pro-wrestling history might be at the helm of the organization, he's doing what it takes to bring respect back to the NWA franchise.  The respect Kahagas has show to the history of the title he holds (read: Picture of the belt by Kerry von Erich's grave), and the respect the KotU have shown to Tharpe (who seemed proud to be pictured with the new champs) demonstrate the kind of respect the NWA is earning from fans and wrestlers alike.

That is, the fans that are paying attention and not just walking lock-step with what one clever and talented indy guy said.

Nice guys finish last.  We'll see how the Tharpe regime continues to progress and build up the oldest organization back to prominence once again. This run on the NJPW promotion needs to be successful.

We'll wait and see.
