FIGHTS: 'Chino' Maidana serves Adrian Broner fist-fulls of humble pie, takes title

PROBLEM CHILD BRONER KNOCKED DOWN A NOTCH (LITERALLY!) BY SCRAPPY ARGENTINE

Earlier this year, I recapped a fight between Adrian Broner vs. Gavin Rees.  In it, I describe Broner's victory as pretty good, but nowhere near the Mayweather status folks claim he's the heir to.  He was good, but not that good as a boxer.  Now as a trash talker, yes, he's a total douchebag.  But as a boxer?  He's just okay.

Well, that assumption was finally put to the test in his title fight against the scrappy Marcos 'El Chino' Maidana at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.  It was a unique chance for Maidana to grab the gold, put in yet a very familiar position of being lined up as a tomato can for a star that promoters were grooming for brighter days.  We know how that played out the first time (don't we, Victor Ortiz).  So, you should have known how this night was probably going to play out.

This was an amazing fight filled with great emotion.  Here's some notes from the fight:

-- BRONER DRY HUMPS MAIDANA
Adrian 'Boner'?
Cocky and brash, Broner plays too much.  Near the end of the 1st round, Broner tried to get into Maidana's head by maneuvering away from a Maidana flurry and dry-humping Maidana from behind.  Funny and rude?  Yes.  It solidified Broner as one of the biggest dumb asses in the sport of boxing today.
But did Madiana serve him a receipt later?  Yes, he did.  Near the end of the fight, with Maidana up on points, he got behind Broner and humped him as well.

-- MAIDANA MAKES BRONER LOOK STUPID FOR 12 ROUNDS
Heir to the throne of Mayweather?  After tonight, he'd be lucky to mop the floors of The Money Team gym.  Mayweather might be the king of trash-talking assholes, but at least the guy has the skill to back it up.
Broner comes across as a dude who is impersonating a superstar. The dude's good and has some talent.  You can't get to this level and not have talent and skill.  But he's got to pull his head out of his own ass and put his skill over his trash talk and disgusting antics in the gym.

-- BRONER KNOCKED DOWN TWICE
LOL!

-- BRONER LEAVES THE RING IN A HUFF AT THE END OF THE NIGHT
Bye!
There's an old saying I hear a lot, especially in Texas, when someone you don't like is leaving the room:  Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

In the end, I'm glad Broner looking like a jackass before, during, and after the fight will forever be preserved online, the modern day stocks, where we can point and laugh at how a dude from Argentina put him on his ass twice and stuffed humble pie down his throat.

-- REMATCH?
Why not?  I'd love to see Maidana hand Broner his ass again.  Who wouldn't?

FIGHTS: Cotto is nowhere in sight in loss to champ Trout

by Bowie Ibarra

Apparently, Puerto Rican challenger Miguel Cotto (40-4) didn't show up in his alleged 'home' in Madison Square Garden when he had the opportunity to take the WBA Light Middleweight title from Texan Austin Trout (26-0).  Trout was able to defend against the atypically non-aggressive Cotto to defend his title as best in the WBA Light Middleweight class.  And, in the end, Cotto's undefeated MSG record was cracked.

Cotto did not display enough of his aggression and science and instead defended against the crisp and clean shots from Trout.  Cotto only made inroads with flurries at the end of some rounds, gaining some advantages at the end from rounds that were usually dominated by the efficient Trout.

It was a disappointing showing from Cotto, whose last fight was against the upstart boxing master, Floyd Mayweather.  Before these last two losses, Cotto looked good in wins against the Shabbas-honoring Yuri Foreman, the wild brawler Ricardo Mayorga, and the bitter rematch against Antonio Margarito.

Cotto had stretched Mayweather more than anyone else had up to their fight, but did not bring any of that crisp science or aggression that worked so well against Mayweather to Trout.

For the undefeated Trout, it was his first big test that he passed with flying colors.  Cotto was able to hurt Trout during the bout, but it wasn't enough to keep the champ from earning a unanimous decision victory.

Trout also had no problem calling out rising Mexican star, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.  If Cotto challenged Trout, then Alvarez is a good next step.  Alvarez has rolled through his opponents, and if Trout can handle Cotto, then its a good match up for both.  And Trout openly wants Canelo's belt.

Boxing fans have a good match up waiting for them in the near future.  Make it happen, boxing gods.

FIGHTS: NWA World Title Follow-up = Tokyo Monster jumps finalists

by Bowie Ibarra

I have to admit it was a shady start to such a prestigious world professional wrestling title tournament.  As mentioned before, I'm not sure why the tourney was rushed and how entrants such as Biggie Biggs were worthy to have their names engraved alongside such legends as Dusty Rhodes, 'Wildfire' Tommy Rich, and Ric Flair.

But as it turned out, the shady start to this tournament ended even shadier as the NWA National Heavyweight Champion, Tokyo Monster Kahagas, who was one of many worthy NWA competitors passed over as a participant, was entered as a ringer for the final.

It's another example of how great (and shady-as-f**k) management can make or break a wrestler and lead them to gold.  In this case, it was Dontay Brown who finagled his charge, Kahagas, into the main event.

As reported by Tony Brooklyn, NWA Vice-President and CFO:

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: On November 2 at NWA DAWG in Clayton New Jersey, Tokyo Monster Kahagas pinned Damien Wayne to become the new NWA™ World Heavyweight Champion.

Kahagas was a last minute entrant in to a scheduled eight man elimination match that advertised Chance Prophet, Justin "The Gift" Kincaid, Lance Erikson, Anthony Nese, "Greek God" Papadon, "Phat Daddy" Biggie Biggs, Lance Anoa'i and
Wayne.

With only Wayne and Prophet remaining in the ring, Kahagas' manager Dontay Brown emerged with the reigning NWA™ National Heavyweight Champion. Brown was on the phone with NWA President R. Bruce Tharpe. Brown informed NWA™ Head Official Fred Richards that Tharpe had approved Kahagas' entry in to the match. Richards confirmed Brown's claim by speaking directly with Tharpe and allowed Kahagas' participation. Wayne then surprised Prophet with a quick pile driver and secured a three count. Shortly thereafter, Kahagas finished off Wayne with a "TMD" (Tokyo Monster Driver).
===
To be honest, I'm not sure why NWA President R. Bruce Tharp made this move to tarnish his own tournament.  This only adds to his questionable reputation, and I imagine Dontay Brown found some sort of legal looophole in how the event was organized, and probably greased Tharps palm for good measure to allow this ultimate travesty (eat your heart out, Chris Trew).  Hell, the legal eagle Tharp might have been in league with Brown and Kahagas in the first place, for all I know.
The way I see it, that's what the NWA gets for throwing this event together so fast.  Had they taken the time to organize as they should have, get their ducks in a row, and set things up correctly, Brown, Tharp, and ultimately, Kahagas, couldn't take advantage like they did.

But its over now, and Kahagas now has a target on his back.  Specifically from the two warriors who earned their shot at the title in the sanctioned tourney, Chance Prophet and Damien Wayne, who had some words for Kahagas.  Here's hoping Brown (and Tharp) are providing enough dough for Kahagas, because he'll be taking the lumps.

This brings up another question brought up by a fan:  If the old NWA rules apply, does Kahagas have to drop the national title now?  And if so, will there be another (hopefully better organized and legally protected) tournament for that title?

Though it was a shady start to a new era for the NWA, its a charged beginnig to what I anticipate to be an interesting run for Kahagas, whose name is now along side such greats as Harley Race, Bobo Brazil, and Sting.

FIGHTS: Morales suffers terrible and swift loss to the undefeated Garcia

by Bowie Ibarra

It took 1:23 of Round 4 for the speed and youth of Danny 'Swift' Garcia (25-0, 15 KO) to topple Erik 'El Terrible' Morales (52-9, 36 KO) with a brutal left hook.  Morales could not get a measure of redemption on Garcia, who had beat Morales in Houston this past March.

Morales seemed slow in spite of his natural warrior's determination.  He answered the youthful Garcia with punches, but it was not enough to get the victory.

This might be the last big payday for the vaunted Tijuana warrior Morales, who had a storied career, including a win against Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera, and several boxing title reigns.  He hopes to have one more match in TJ sometime in the near future.

Danny Garcia is in line for another great fight.  His home promotion of Golden Boy is grooming him for stardom, but he will need another victory against other members of his weight class, including Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson.  Zab Judah would be a good matchup to continue his rise.

ZombieBloodFights.com salutes Erik Morales and looks forward to watching Danny Garcia's rise through the boxing ranks.
