BLOOD: Bloodthirsty Thursday deliver's a 'Hatchet' Triple Feature

OUTRAGEOUS AND CONTROVERSIAL HORROR TRILOGY PLAYS BACK-TO-BACK IN SATX
by
Bowie V. Ibarra

Kelly Warren Hammond and the boys and girls of Bloodthirsty Thursday brought the quality blood and gore to the silver screen again to Alamo Drafthouse Westlake in San Antonio, Texas.  The 'Hatchet' triple-feature screening was yet another fine example of the great fun BTT is bringing to the San Antonio horror scene.

The event was a fundraiser for 'Scares that Care'.  And proceeds from the tickets went to the organization that helps kids pay for their medical bills.

Fast Custom Shirts was there, and I was able to pick up a Victor Crowley tribute shirt.

Fans of the series will appreciate the fun and scares I had watching the movies for the first time on the big screen.  The kills were ridiculous.  The story was alright, and they built on the story for all three, which was kind of cool.  One of the highlights was watching Kane Hodder as the father of Victor Crowley, who eventually took on the role of the older Victor Crowley, the killer.  There was even a horror fan fantasy matchup with Kane against Derek Mears, who played Jason in the Friday the 13th remake.  Horror fans might know that Kane was Jason for many of the last flicks and was expected to earn the role, but lost it to Mears.

And Sid Haig has a hilarious cameo as well in the third one.

Check out the trailers here:

If you live in San Antonio and haven't gone to one of the Bloodthirsty Thursday Screenings, then get on it.  They're a lot of fun.

And if you like horror, pick up this recent horror title from ZBFbooks.com.  'Alamo Rising' is the story of a group of amateur ghost hunters who fall ass backwards into a dark conspiracy to unleash a curse on the Alamo that could destroy downtown SATX.  Get 'Alamo Rising' today in paperback or kindle today HERE.  Check out the trailer below.

BLOOD: ZBFbooks.com checks out BloodThirsty Thursday's 'Demons' I and II

MONTHLY EVENT SCORES AGAIN WITH CLASSIC ITALIAN HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE
by
Bowie V. Ibarra

Horror fans in San Antonio, Texas, were treated yet again to another quality exhibition of two of Italy's finest horror titles:  Demons and Demons 2.  Bloodthirsty Thursday's montly horror movie screenings has sliced its way into the consciousness of the SATX Horror Community and for good reason.  Every month they bring quality horror to the big screen.  Yet again, this month was no exception.

I thought it was cool that they were able to procure a Demons replica movie poster.

And, naturally, my Catholic consciousness felt a little guilty when I saw on this day there was actually a screening of a movie called 'Son of God'.  What?  Really?

Don't tell the Pope I went to see 'Demons' instead.

The flick was amazing, as usual.  The movie was not ridiculous as much as it was a surreal nightmare, as all Italian horror movies seem to be (see 'The Beyond', Zombi 3, Suspiria, etc.).

Here's the trailer for 'Demons'.  It's the story of two friends who were given two tickets to a movie by a mysterious figure.  It's just as wild as the trailer makes it out to be.

'Demons 2' is just as wild.  The Demon plague from the first movie has been cut off.  But they return through wildly supernatural means that modern horror movies have ripped off (The Ring, anybody?).

One of the funniest elements from the first movie was the soundtrack, featuring Rick Springfield, Go West, Billy Idol, and Accept to name a few.  You are going to crack up during the dirtbike demon fight with 'Fast as a Shark' in the background.

Getting to see these flicks back to back also treated us to an unexpected laugh as featured actors from the first film are recast in different roles in the second flick.

Fast Custom shirts was also in attendance again.  A company out of Corpus Christi, Texas, these guys put out affordable and cool shirts of various designs.  This time around, I picked up the Italian 'City of the Living Dead' shirt, and this commemorative 'Demons' tribute shirt.

All in all, it was another awesome night of beer, food, and horror with the Bloodthirsty Thursday crew.  Incidentally, it was the BTT sponsor's bday party as well.  Happy Bday, Kelly Warren Hammond.  Thanks for bringing a monthly horror movie party to SATX!

BLOOD: SATX Horror Aficionado Reviews 'Evil Dead' Rebirth

KELLY WARREN HAMMOND FACEBOOKS HIS REVIEW

By Bowie Ibarra

Well, I didn't write this review.  I admit it.

I pretty much ripped it off from SATX Bloodthirsty Thursday Mastermind Kelly Warren Hammond's Facebook page.  Hey, I did reach out and ask his permission (I hadn't heard back from him.  Doh!).

Do me a favor.  Click on that Bloodthirsty Thursday live link in the previous paragraph and 'like' it on
Facebook.  C'mon, you're liking kittens, snarky memes, and John Denver's tribute page, you can like this page.  Take the four-seven seconds it takes to do that and come back here.

You might remember the SATX Bloodthirsty Thursday events previously mentioned in the ZBF.com blog, including interviews with people leaving the 'Return of the Living Dead' screening, and a review of a screening of the underrated 80s classic, "My Bloody Valentine'.

I'm reposting the Facebook review here because it is a great review from a noted horror hound that I think needs to be read by others looking forward to the movie, like myself.

So, here it is.  There is a bit of a spoiler at the end about a cameo, so consider that before reading.

Again, my apologies to Kelly.  The review was just too awesome to keep under wraps.

I owe you a beer, Kelly.

Check it out and get ready for April 5th!

"The GOOD, The BAD and "I'm the Guy with the Gun" Review:

THE GOOD:
1. THIS_IS_NOT_A_REMAKE!!! rather, as the ED2013 official web site says, "It's a Rebirth" so, with that said you can take the movi...e one of two ways. simply, it's a "rebirth" or re-imagining of the original concept OR it's a semi-sequel. you watch it. you decide.

2. there was more blood, gore (and profanity?!!) than had seen in an R rated horror flick since....well, possibly DEAD ALIVE. so no fear blood, guts and gore lovers there is plenty and i do mean PLENTY of it to go around. :)

3. as some "critics" would had seen ED2013 just a couple of weeks ago pointed out that the "character development" slowed down the pace of the movie. i can NOT disagree more! the movie starts off with a *punch* in the face/gut, then moves into character development (and with only a handful of characters, and 2 of them are main characters who cares), then sets you up for what is about to happen and then....here it comes, BOOM!!! non-stop AWESOMENESS there after.

4. unlike EDII and the "third installment" AOD, this 2013 version actually feels like you are watching an "Evil Dead" movie but with out the campyness.

THE BAD
1. to many "cut to black screen" at the end of scenes. one or two, OK i'm fine with that, but 4 or 5 of them? made if feel like the director and editor couldn't really decide on how they wanted certain scenes to end and/or flow into each other. oh well....

2. if you've watch either the Green Band Trailer or the Red Band Trailer there's a very popular piece of footage that is shown in both, but not in the actual movie. *shugs* dunno why, maybe it seemed like over kill (no pun intended) but it's just not there.

3. Mia has 2 corny lines towards the end of the movie. had they cut it down to just one, i would have been happy with that. BUT... at least they weren't as bad as the lines (and the line delivery) like in the recent TCM3D movie: "Welcome to Texas, asshole...!" and "Do your thing, cousin!"

"I'm the Guy with the Gun"
1. yes, Yes, YES Bruce Campbell has a cameo. you'll need to stay to the very tail end of the credits because it's quick and cool. :)"
Thanks, Kelly.  I hope you don't mind me sharing it.  It was a great review.  I'll buy you a beer at the screening on April 5th.

And expect a ZombieBloodFights.com review on the weekend of April 5th, the official release date of 'The Cruel Fate of Dr. Brewster McGill', incidentally, in paperback and Kindle.

BLOOD: Reflections on 'My Bloody Valentine' '81

by Bowie Ibarra

Rue Morgue special edition provided for
guests, courtesy 'Bloodthirsty Thursday,
'My Bloody Valentine' (1981) is a really underrated classic.  The legend of Harry Warden and the gas-masked specter that his image became should be counted among the greatest cinema slasher standards.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the classic tale, Harry Warden was a survivor of a mine shaft gas explosion during a citywide Valentine's Day celebration.  The blast was caused by supervisor's leaving early to go to the dance and not checking the gas leve'ls.  Harry survived the blast and subsequent burial by eating the flesh of his dead comrades.  He was committed for insanity.

I'm not going to give away the story, because if you like bloody horror movies, then you need to seek it out and watch it.  It's worth the search.

I was fortunate enough to catch a screening of the uncut version at Alamo Drafthouse Westlake in San Antonio, Texas.  They have a monthly program called 'Bloodthirsty Thursday' that features some classic horror movies from days gone by.  The originator of the program, Kelly Warren Hammond, is a true gorehound and lover of the genre.

Truth be told, I watched this movie when I was way too young on cable TV many years back.  I was probably 8, and I shouldn't have been watching this movie at all.  I remember the woman who was put in the dryer the most, and the finish, with the killer going insane and losing his arm through an avalanche, but escaping.  I also remember the bizarre folk song about Harry Warden at the end.

Watching the movie again after so many years brought back memories.  Moments in the movie long forgotten seemed so familiar as the horrific images and story opened pages of my mind long closed.  It was amazing.

And the uncut version was gruesome as well.  You could tell when the additions appeared as they were unfinished and refined, yet provided that extra gruesome touch that I recognized as new.

And the servers got in on the fun as well.  My receipt had one of Harry Warden's poems on it:  Roses are Red/Violets are Blue/One is Dead/Next is You!

If you can find this bloody classic, watch it.  Better yet, add it to your library.  And if you can ever attend a screening of Bloodthirsty Thursday in San Antonio, do it.  It's always a great time.
